Department Introduction

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, formerly known as the Adult Division II of Cardiac Surgery, is mainly responsible for surgical treatment and interventional therapy of aortic disease, valvular disease and coronary heart disease. At present, the ward has 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians and 4 attending physicians. Director Ruixin Fan is the academic leader of aortic disease in cardiac surgery and chairman of the vascular branch of Guangdong Medical Doctor Association. He has won national honors for many times. Director Tucheng Sun is the head of the department. He once studied in Berlin Heart Center, Germany, and is good at diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. He has won many awards from Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Medical Doctor Association and presided over a number of provincial and municipal scientific projects. Director Ping Zhu is the deputy director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery. He is responsible for a number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His scientific research achievements have won the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Award. In terms of clinical work, the department carried out the first surgical treatment of aortic dissection in South China in 2000. In 2018, the number of cases of aortic surgery in the whole year was 789, exceeding 50% of the total cases of such surgery in Guangdong Province, ranking among the top in China. In cooperation with the Department of Cardiology, our department carried out one-stop hybrid (intervention and surgery) surgery for aortic diseases for the first time in Guangdong Province in 2013. By 2020, the total number of cases of aortic hybrid surgery had reached 450 cases, which ranked among the first in Guangdong Province. In 2017, our department cooperated with the Department of Cardiology to carry out transcatheter aortic valve implantation for the first time in Guangdong Province, and the annual number of such surgical cases exceeded 100, ranking at the domestic first-class level. In terms of scientific research, the department has presided over 15 national scientific projects, 16 provincial scientific projects and 7 municipal scientific projects, and published more than 15 SCI papers every year. In terms of teaching, the department trains 2-4 doctoral students and 5-7 master students every year. In addition, as the standard training base of cardiothoracic surgery, the department is responsible for the standardized clinical training of 20-30 residents every year, and actively promotes the cultivation of talents in aortic surgery.
