Affiliated to Guangdong Cardiovascular Institute, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences) has a solid foundation for education. We have cultivated a large number of high-quality medical talents, being recognized as an important training center for clinical medical talents in southern Guangdong Province.

We began postgraduate education in the 1970s. In 1978, we began to enroll master’s and doctor’s students and in 1981 we were one of the first institutions to be authorized to grant a master’s and doctor’s degree. In 2004 we were approved to set up a postdoctoral mobile station. In 2018 we were authorized to grant a master’s degree in clinical medicine and in 2021 we were entitled to grant a doctorate in clinical medicine as a first-level discipline. In addition, we are empowered to enroll professional postgraduates in 26 fields including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology, as well as academic postgraduates and doctoral students in 17 second-level disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, oncology, neurology, psychosis, and mental hygiene, and emergency medicine. Now, we have 982 senior professional technicians, 98 doctoral supervisors, and 275 master’s tutors.

Apart from independently enrolling and cultivating master’s and doctoral students, we have been active to develop joint education, as evidenced by jointly training postgraduates with key medical colleges such as Southern Medical University, South China University of Technology, and Shantou University Medical College. Now there are 1,045 postgraduates studying in our hospital. At present, we enroll students who intend to study clinical medicine, pharmacy, biology, biomedical engineering, nursing, and other specialties, with the training type including academic master’s degree and doctor’s degree, and professional master’s and doctor’s degree respectively. The basic training period is 3 years for master’s students and 3-4 years for doctoral students. What’s more, with the establishment of the improved reward system for postgraduates’ academic achievements, we grant postgraduate basic allowances ranging from 1800 to 3000 yuan/month and fellowships based on the training type and whether they obtain the qualification of medical practitioner. Besides, supervisors can be awarded a research grant additionally.

With a commitment to the synergy of clinic, scientific research and teaching, we, as a high-level hospital in Guangdong Province, give full play to the high-quality resources to build a new platform for academic exchanges and seek diversification amid normalization for profound academic exchanges. Furthermore, we have established such exchanges and cooperation in terms of scientific research with many world-renowned medical institutes, by which outstanding postgraduates are sent to get further study so as to broaden their global vision and become innovative medical talents with diversified specialties.
