Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital (GDPH) is one of the earliest training bases for standardized training of residents and general practitioners in Guangdong Province. After assessed and approved by Guangdong Provincial Health Department in 1997, it became the first batch of provincial resident training site for “unit people”, which refers to people who have a full-time job. In 2002, it took the lead in piloting the resident training mode for “social people”, which means new graduates who don’t have a full-time job. In 2007, approved by the Ministry of Health, it became one of the first pilot bases for specialist training in China. As of 2011, 33 bases of GDPH have become the pilot ones recognized by the Ministry of Health, being the training base with the largest professional coverage and enrollment scale in Guangdong Province. In 2014, the hospital was regarded as one of the first resident standardized training spots in China. In 2017, it began to accept resident doctors entrusted by other brother hospitals. In the same year, it started the sub-specialist training of cardiovascular and lung oncology specialty, also being the national pilot base for standardized training of specialists.

GDPH has undertaken national and provicial tasks including teacher training for standardized training of residents and specialists as well as trainees’ final examination. In 2021, the hospital, responsible for assessment work within Guangdong Province, took a lead in arranging the work related to appraisal of residents’ clinical practice abilities when they finish training. It is also one of the two sites in Guangdong for specialists to take theoretical examination, which are the first national pilot final test program for standardized training of specialists. In addition, it is where specialists take clinical practice exams.

The hospital boasts many bases which are as follows.

(1) Twenty-seven resident standardized training bases at national level: internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, emergency, general, surgery (cardiothoracic surgery), surgery (plastic surgery), surgery (neurosurgical surgery), surgery (urological surgery), orthopaedics, anesthesiology, neurology, dermatology, critical care medicine, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, oral general practice, oral and maxillofacial surgery, radiation oncology, clinical pathology, laboratory medicine, radiology, ultrasound medicine, and nuclear medicine.

(2) Five resident bases of key specialties at provincial level: internal medicine, emergency, clinical pathology, rehabilitation medicine, and psychiatry.

(3) Seven specialist training pilot bases at national level: cardiovascular disease, respiratory and critical illness epidemiology, internal and critical illness medicine, surgical and critical illness medicine, internal medicine geriatrics, neonatal perinatal medicine, and general surgery.

(4) Four teacher training bases for resident standardized training at national level: surgery (thoracic and cardiac surgery), neurology, radiology, and psychiatry.

(5)Seven teacher training bases for resident standardized training at provincial level: surgery, surgery (cardiothoracic surgery), surgery (plastic surgery), emergency, psychiatry, neurology, and radiology.

In a word, GDPH in this new era, by adhering to its philosophy of “great doctors with virtue in pursuit of masterly medical skills", shoulders the responsibility of medical education featuring virtue, integration, solid skills, high efficiency, innovation and excellence. Besides, it attaches importance to basic theory, knowledge, and technique, along with rigorous requirements, well-connected organization, and prudent attitudes. It also champions honest words and behaviors, full preparation, and earnest teaching, coupled with new theory, fresh thinking and innovative methods, which helps to consolidate the teaching foundation of resident training to build high-level hospitals and cultivate doctors with noble medical ethics and outstanding medical skills to protect people’s heath.
